ONYX and TEAL

This weekend Northern  Tealers Glen, Maggie, Pam, Neil, Dot, Phil and Vince got together socially and to compare  cars – I’ve seen photos before of Vince’s  beautiful Onyx, but never between two Teals as here : she’s a tiny gem – with the emphasis on tiny.  A Bugatti Type  37 on which she is most accurately modelled is pretty small too… Neil says she gets admiring looks everywhere, and accelerates very rapidly.  Here’s another shot of the Lancashire/Yorkshire accord.  Thanks for the delightful and most instructive pictures, Neil.

CAR OF THE SHOW – BROOKLANDS 

 

 

 

 

 

 

At the weekend Angelo, David Ward, Cliff Sedman and Ernest Neil were flying the flag for the Teals among the Benleys, Bugattis and other classics at Brooklands.  The car of The Show was chosen, and the cup presented to:  Angelo De Souza and his Teal Type 35 Boat-tail 214!   Teals have become well-respected in their own right for the quality oftheir  build, the beauty of their  lines and the  practical usability of these fine sporting machines. Congratulations, Angelo.

BIGGLES at BAMBURGH

 

 

After the June/July Spider Run 2, Neil ( Biggles ) Bridges and Pam decided on a run up the magnificent and rugged Northumberland coast and on into Scotland in their splendid Teal Type 35 four-seater ‘Phoenix’.  Here they are at the redoubtable Bamburgh Castle, near to Lindisfarne on the North Sea coast… 

 

 

 

 

I  feel that Phoenix is one of the most elegant Teals in the Club, and her surroundings at this noble castle seem totally appropriate. Neil also is one of the most noble Tealers of them all, warm-hearted, generous and funny – and Pam the most charming (mine’s a pint, Neil)

Bank Holiday Weekend – Teals at The Royal Egham Show

It’s the Royal Egham Show in Surrey this weekend (24th August), with a strong classic car showing – and the brilliant flag-wavers for the Teal marque are there, of course: Angelo and David with their fine sporting machinery. Angelo has an unique turn of phrase, and he’s now come up with a new one to me “BBB – British Built Bugattis!”

Beauty on the Carpet

You’re right, she’s lovely. She’s a Teal Type 44 with a Ford Pinto 2.0 motor belonging to Teal Owners’ Club members Jane and Alan Asher of Berkshire. In fact she’s THE Teal Type 44, the only one made – see the Teal Type 44 page of this website for lots more photos, and comparison with a Bugatti Type 44 (tell the difference? Hello, I’m back from my hols in sunny Malta, and have interesting photos of Teals at last weekend’s GOODWOOD REVIVAL meeting – thanks to David Ward, who was there (of course) with several other Tealers…. and pictures of an interesting Bugatti Type 73 (by Teal?). See below.

Tealer Andrew Noble was over from the south of France, has been zooming round Britain for the last two weeks in his fine Teal, and couldn’t resist Goodwood, naturally.

SURPRISE!

Spotted in the Revival show by David Ward was this magnificent Bugatti Type 73 single-seater…but is it all it seems to be on the surface – or is it really a Bugatti in Teal’s clothing? See below!

 

Twenty years ago in Manchester Bob Jones was asked to re-body an original Bugatti Type 73 in the style of a German pre-war racer – here is the lovely aluminium body designed by Bob and built at Teal Cars – is it the same Goodwood beauty? – you decide. FLYING TEALS

Have you ever flown in your Teal? Of course you have. But did you know that there were Teals that flew for hours across the Pacific Ocean, and landed on water? Me neither…

This voyage of discovery started when Dot and Phil on their holiday last month in the Channel Islands kindly sent a lovely postcard of a Sunderland flying boat. Which got me thinking idly, as one does, and I typed Sunderland flying boat into Google images – imagine my surprise when a TEAL came up. And not one but several. It seems that Tasman Empire Airways Ltd (TEAL), the predecessor of Air New Zealand , used our much-loved acronym in the 1940s, well before Trafford Engineering Automobiles Limited started creating the beautiful Teal cars designed by Ian Foster and Bob Jones, inspired by Ettore Bugatti.

…To research the long-distance routes across the Pacific Ocean TEAL Airways New Zealand also used Catalina flying boats in the years after the war:

As a footnote, Tealers might be interested to know that an aircraft called a Teal is still currently flying; it’s a small flying boat made by Thurston and most useful in locations where lakes abound, such as Canada and Finland… She’s nearly as pretty as the Teals we know and love – and a similar colour …

There is more info and lots of photos of Teal cars with aircraft further down this page; so now we know why the magnificent Teal badge at the head of this page has glorious wings!

DUTCH CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE

 

 

That fine, loyal and charming Tealer AALDERT POSTMA has just won the Concours D’Elegance at his local car show near Amsterdam, and has the champagne to prove it… Aaldert was the originator of the successful Teals to Tulips rally in The Netherlands this spring, and has had his Teal Type 35 totally rebuilt over the past two years, and converted to left hand drive – a rare beast. There are more photos of the beauty below (the Teal, not Aaldert – though many think he should win the prize for elegance himself ; Aaldert says there were no lady judges that day….)

Aaldert owns a second rare Teal, a Type 43 built up from scratch in UK over the last two years and now in Holland. More news of that interesting sporting car shortly… congratulations on flying the Teal flag high, Aaldert.

Talking of flying….

“Isadora” is the splendid Teal Type 35 four-seater of Bob Lewis, founder member of the Teal Owners’ Club in the 1980s, and with Bob Jones builder of Teals, and designer and builder of Projects of Distinction ; almost all of the widely-admired stainless steel handbrakes fitted to Teals are of Bob Lewis’ design and manufacture; he has been a key creative figure throughout the past 30 years of Teal history. At one stage 20 years ago Bob needed to sell Isadora, but luckily 15 years later he was able to buy her back. Here she is at Gloucestershire/ Staverton airport, with – is it a De Haviland Tiger Moth? Colin will be able to tell us – he probably once flew her… Isadora is Teal of The Week (TOW) No 33.

Here is Isadora again; Bob recently re-engined Isadora, and also took her to the Goodwood Revival this year in company with several other Teals (see Teal News Page 8). Bob has set up a Facebook page for the Teal Owners Club, where you can see more pictures of Isadora and of other Teals – go to www.facebook.com and tap in Teal Owners Club. Bob/Rob Lewis is also a leading light in the world of firework displays through his company Celebration Fireworks – putting on magnificent shows and winning major prizes internationally…

THE KOP

Tealers Angelo, Antonio, David and Cliff attended on 20/21 September the dramatic hill climb near Princes Risborough in the Chilterns known as The Kop ( http://www.kophillclimb.org.uk/home.html ). On the way Antonio captured these lovely autumnal photos of two unusually fine Teal Type 35s:
