PROFILE OF A TEAL

This rather fine Teal Type 35 boat-tail (6C/2500 Triumph), sometimes called The Silver Streak, was purchased by Keith Lidgerwood and John Chalmers, together with a Fergus Mosquito replica of a 1930s Aston Martin, from the estate of a former garage owner in Scotland, and brought to Cheshire.

Unfortunately Keith was becoming unwell at this time, and John is a busy heart surgeon so they were not able to develop the full potential of these fine cars; this Type 35 was then sold to fellow-Tealer, and enthusiast John King from nearby Shropshire, who spent over a year working on improvements to engine, gear box, brakes and running gear….

After much work and several adventures, John brought his lovely Silver Streak on Teal rallies in Shropshire, Wales, to Prescott and, memorably on Spider Run 2 with Wendy heading for Land’s End.

After much fun and games, John received from Germany a generous offer, and Silver Streak departed for the Continent to star in the Essen Classic Car Show. And very fine she looked too, a credit to the Teal Marque:

NEW TEAL OF THE WEEK (No 154)

A Teal Type 35 four-seater appeared on Ebay(7/8/17) which hasn’t been seen in Teal circles for about 10 years. She’s registered TIL 1930, is dark blue, with an 1800cc engine and she has less than 28,000 miles on the clock.

She has a rather lovely and unusual dashboard for a Teal, with a switch marked aerial (!). She also is fitted with an elephant Bugatti radiator mascot.

We understand that this Teal was originally bought in uncompleted kit form by Cliff Sedman, completed by him and then sold on many years ago, and that considerable cosmetic improvements have subsequently been carried out…There‘s no doubt Teal of the week No 154 is a beauty; but not cheap. Nor should she be.

Comment: There are three fine Teal 4-seaters avaiiable at the moment; the one above, Neil Bridges’ lovely ‘Phoenix’ and Chris’s grey-blue Teal, also on Ebay – any one of which would make a fine grand tourer. Good Tealing to the lucky purchasers – and you’ll be welcome in The Teal Owners’ Club (the best £18 worth on the market, and at least a hundred instant colleagues).

OUR TEAL ORIGINS

Many Tealers will recall that Bob Jones took over the manufacture of Teals from Ian Foster in early 1986, and by October of that year was producing re-designed, aluminium-bodied Teals, which were a rapid success with the general public.

Bob couldn’t keep up with the demand for Teals from his Altrincham site alone, so he asked Tealer Ben Trumble in Yorkshire to set up a second manufacturing team (Ben, the two Johns and Steve the Sprayer), operating out of Leeds, receiving Teal kits from Bob and building them up into complete aluminium-bodied Teals, painted to the customer’s specification; this they did successfully, trading as Northern Classic Sports Cars, for several years.

The full story is told by Ben on Page 11 of this website “Thrilling Teals”, where he also talks about the many miles he covered driving his two Teals (Dizzy 1 and Dizzy 2) far and wide across Europe. These Teals are still running today. The advertising page above is a reflection of that happy manufacturing period where Teals were being produced on both sides of the Pennines.

Recently I’ve been over Rye and Hastings way, on the Sussex coast . It has been p*ssing down. On the map something caught my eye: Historic Motor Museum. Worth a look. When I got there, at Rolvenden, 15 miles inland from Rye, these cars were parked outside:

and six more similar beauties in the pub car-park nearby – a club outing, clearly (it was lunchtime).

You enter the museum through an old-fashioned car memoribilia shop – bits and pieces everywhere, a higgledy-piggledy delight! Entry to the Museum itself is £3.50 ( taken by an old lady and old gentleman ) through the back of the shop, and looks like this:

and inside that door one is greeted by this sight:

The whole room (and it goes a long way back, then a second room) is packed with 1920s and 1930s Morgan three-wheelers, all magnificently restored over the past 50 years by the old gentleman, Mr Chris Booth. And one can wallow in nostalgia, for on every side are show cases stuffed with every kind imaginable of pre-war and 50’s car memoribilia. Well worth the £3.50!

It all reminded me of when our Teal Club visited the Morgan factory in Malvern in 2012 on the Tewksbury Run, and we saw many of the delightful new Morgan 3-wheelers (and four-) being hand created before our eyes…

And when I came out of the Morgan museum, the rain had stopped.

Why so much interest? I must admit I’m biased, because before I had Brigitte Teal, I drove the maroon 4/4 below:

Yes, it had its plus points: it looked good, it came with some prestige and pride, and went well in a straight line; but I found the steering very heavy on corners, and at slow speeds, such as when parking, it became a wrestling match… perhaps it was just my car, but when Brigitte Teal came up for offer, what a contrast – she had all the plus points, and was also a pleasure to drive at any speed. Of course our distinguished Tealing colleagues, Neil and Vicky, previously the owners of Vital Spark, are now the custodians of a splendid Morgan Plus 4 :

and Aaldert of the two splendid Teals also has a fine large Morgan Aero 8 which he has brought on Teal and social runs:

A PERSONAL OPINION

The ‘Teal Bugatti Type 44’ currently for sale on EBay is not, in my personal view, a Teal Type 44. It is a Teal Type 35 four-seat tourer, which, I believe, was not meant in any way by Bob Jones to replicate a Bugatti Type 44. There is only one Teal Type 44, which was intended to look like a Bugatti Type 44 so far as I know, built by Bob Jones, a completely different shape, with doors, running boards, a different hood profile and with a Ford Pinto 2-litre engine. The lovely Type 35 four-seater Teal currently for sale looks very like Teal of the Week No 72.

This is the only Teal Type 44, so far as we know, intended by Bob Jones to look like a Bugatti Type 44 :

BROOKLANDS A FEW THURSDAYS AGO

While the mechanics at David Ward’s garage were adjusting the brakes on my little Fiat Panda, DW suggested a spin over to Brooklands in his Teal Type 35 boat tail ‘Dolly‘. Yes! Here David is adjusting tyre pressures outside the Brooklands Clubhouse on a glorious sunny day….

As a Brooklands member, David has access all areas and we viewed the aircraft museums, including Vickers Vimy, Hawker Hunters, Jet Provost, Swift, VC10, BAC1-11, and a Vickers Varsity nav trainer in which I flew in 1963 from RAF Hullavington, and also the splendid collection of classic sports and racing cars of the 1920s, 30s and Grand Prix racers up to date – a delight.

A number of Brooklands staff and visitors admired the quality, patination and lines of David’s Teal, also the cockpit instruments and Bugatti steering wheel, and his unusual external gear change:

And when we arrived back at Egham after lunch at Brooklands and an exhilarating supercharged spin back, my Fiat was fixed and ready to return to Sussex. Personal service indeed from David, Karen and the team – all Tealers receive a special welcome – recommended.

CORSICA  TEALER

Many may have read in our club magazine Teal Spiel (Summer Edition) of the adventures in Corsica of Tealer Andrew Noble, who lives in Southern France. Here are a couple of photos of his Teal Type 35 boat tail, which was widely admired on the island after the initial crossing from Nice to Bastia…

Andrew’s Teal is the centre of attention at Col de Bavella in the Corsican mountains

Andrew adds that Corsica has loads of interesting roads, long, sweeping corners, spectacular gorges, rocky mountains, very few gendarmes, and good hospitality in little hotels with safe parking. The Teal behaved throughout and got a great reception as always in France, people waving, clapping and hooting.

Thanks, Andrew – it sounds a splendid week.

NORFOLK TEALER (S)

Our East Anglian correspondent, Richard Ashton. was at a Norfolk Sporting Car Club meeting over the weekend, and was surprised to meet a new Tealer who has just purchased the lovely Teal Type 35 four-seater BIG2959 shown below, which many Tealers will recognise:

The new owner Nick is a keen enthusiast, has done a lot of work on the car, which Richard says sounds great with the 1800 cc engine and a new stainless custom-made exhaust. Welcome, Nick.

TEALERS AND CLASSICS GALORE

1926 Bugatti Type 37 at FlyWheel 2017, Bicester

On the long weekend 23/24/25 June 2017, fourteen Tealers * enjoyed a splendid long weekend in Oxfordshire under the guidance of Colin and Irené, and Chris and Yvonne. On Friday evening after drinks we dined out together beside the Thames before coffee at Cobshall; on Saturday morning Colin and Chris guided us through lovely Cotswold countrside to the Swan at Swinsbrook for morning coffee on the River Windrush with the Mitford sisters, and then led us through Burford, Stow, Moreton and the Fosse Way to the Gaydon Motor museum of British cars which was terrific, especially with the new Jaguar Building, while some visited Upton Hall (National Trust) near Banbury; we then returned to delightful Cobshall Cottage (Mansion?) for a superb meal conjured from ambrosia and nectar by Irené and Yvonne – pure delight!

On the Sunday all 14 of us attended the absolutely outstanding classic car show and flying displays (‘FLYWHEEL’) at Bicester Heritage – perhaps there were a thousand classic cars there, ranging over a century from 1910 to date, and including a fine Bugatti Type 30 and a delicious Type 37 (above). Many of the cars demonstrated and showed off noisily and at speed on track, while sunlit biplanes dived low overhead – happy days indeed. The distinguished attendees were: * Janice, David and George, Ellen and George, Andy Dutton (Club Sec), Bob Mills (Club Chairman) Rupert, Yvonne and Chris, Brian and Francesca and, of course, Colin and Irené.

Comments:Lincolnshire George’s splendid green Type 35 is currently being modified to fit MGB rear brake drums; and David and Janice’s magnificent Type 59, often driven by young George, is undergoing fuel modifications.

Our heartfelt thanks go to Colin and Chris for organising the whole three days of fun – a classic Teal weekend; and especially to Irené and Yvonne for the wonderful meals. Here are some photos:

MAGNIFICENT TEAL TYPE 43 IN THE NETHERLANDS

This magnificent Teal Type 43 has just completed it’s first full rally in the Netherlands, driven by double-Tealer and owner Aaldert Postma…

Aaldert writes:

Many Tealers will know that Aaldert designed this Teal Type 43 with Mike Hall and had it built in Evesham in 2012/13, with much engine re-building, wiring, fettling, painting, hood design and manufacture, and final finishing in the Netherlands over the past two years. This result is a total triumph, a credit to Aaldert and a Teal for the Club to be proud of – bravo, Aaldert. I suspect that I am not the only one to wish it was mine!

Road Fund Tax Exemption 

You may have noticed a thread on the Discussion Forum pages about applying for Road Fund Tax Exemption due to the age of your Teal.  Here’s a cheerful note  from Dorset about what happened to Tealer Ron: 

 

I applied for a year’s RFT in the normal way and paid my fee as I always have. A month later I had a nice letter from DVLA explaining I had applied using the wrong form but they would be enclosing my new Reg Papers showing HISTORIC as the only change , and a  note to say that a refund would be issued in due course . It arived the following day , a full refund. So (touch wood) no bother what so ever, did not even have to ask ! Thank you DVLA.

R.I.P.  –  ACTOR AND TEALER

 

 

 

 Bobby Knutt 1945-2017

 

 

Sad news reaches us today from Sheffield:  Yorkshire-born actor, comedian, club stalwart  and Tealer Bobby Knutt has died.  Born in November 1945, Tealer Bobby Knutt  became a famous face on television, playing starring roles in Emmerdale and Benidorm.  He was also a star name around the Yorkshire clubs as a stand-up comedian and was well-respected and liked in the local community.  In the 90s he was often seen in his Teal Type 35 boat-tail (see his Teal below), and was a close friend of several Yorkshire Tealing Folk, who are greatly saddened by his parting. As one Sheffield Tealer told me today (25Sep2017):  “We were best pals for 58 years”.  R.I.P. Bobby Knutt.

With the racing windscreens and the canvas side-screens  fitted it’s surprisingly snug in the cockpit; with the tonneau also fitted so it covers the passenger seat and is unzipped down the middle, you can collect a range of goodies snug and dry on the passenger seat: route map, packet of chocolate hobnobs, extra-strong mints…the choice is yours.  And if your Teal is fitted with a heater, the tonneau and side-screens trap the warmth inside, resulting in toasted toes in February. All good.

There’s quite a nice-looking Teal Type 35 boat-tail for sale from Ivor Bleaney garage in the New Forest – for £44,000… came from the factory in 1980, apparently (hmm no such ‘factory’ existed in 1980 – probably date of donor car logbook).

You may have noticed a thread on the Discussion Forum pages about applying for Road Fund Tax Exemption due to the age of your Teal.  Here’s a cheerful note  from Dorset about what happened to Tealer Ron: 

 

 

I applied for a year’s RFT in the normal way and paid my fee as I always have. A month later I had a nice letter from DVLA explaining I had applied using the wrong form but they would be enclosing my new Reg Papers showing HISTORIC as the only change , and a  note to say that a refund would be issued in due course . It arived the following day , a full refund. So (touch wood) no bother what so ever, did not even have to ask ! Thank you DVLA.

R.I.P.  –  ACTOR AND TEALER

 

 

 

 Bobby Knutt 1945-2017

 

 

Sad news reaches us today from Sheffield:  Yorkshire-born actor, comedian, club stalwart  and Tealer Bobby Knutt has died.  Born in November 1945, Tealer Bobby Knutt  became a famous face on television, playing starring roles in Emmerdale and Benidorm.  He was also a star name around the Yorkshire clubs as a stand-up comedian and was well-respected and liked in the local community.  In the 90s he was often seen in his Teal Type 35 boat-tail (see his Teal below), and was a close friend of several Yorkshire Tealing Folk, who are greatly saddened by his parting. As one Sheffield Tealer told me today (25Sep2017):  “We were best pals for 58 years”.  R.I.P. Bobby Knutt.

ANSWER: Bob Jones wrote to say that as part of his 1986-1987 upgrading of the Teal Type 35 with modified chassis and aluminium bodywork he decided that new, larger, wire wheels were required for handling and looks, and he commissioned Motor Wheel Services of Slough and Manchester to make them and the hub fittings. This is the first Teal Type 35 to be fitted with the new 18-inch Wire Wheels with which we are now so familiar. At a rough estimate maybe 500 such wheels and fittings have been purchased from MWS.

Rob Lewis and Isadora. Rob is one of the great original heroes of the Teal movement, building Isadora and many other Teal Type 35s and Type 59s, setting up a company to build fine classic replica 1930s delivery vans, making nearly every handbrake on nearly every Teal, losing it all, selling Isadora, and years later buying her back, setting up a most successful firework business, and seen at many classic car shows such as Prescott and Goodwood , showing the flag for Teals. We salute your many successes and your deep contribution to the Teal story, Rob.

Ian Foster (right) founder, designer and creator of Teal GRP-bodied cars from 1983 to 1986 and Bob Jones, designer and creator of aluminium-bodied Teal Type 35s, 43s, 44 and 59s from 1986-1998. They are with Ian and Maggie Foster’s original GRP-bodied Type 35 ‘HKA’ then re-bodied for Ian in aluminium by Bob Jones in 1987. This fine Teal was later purchased and enjoyed by Keith Lidgerwood of Cheshire, who kindly let me try this legendary Teal out 25 years later on several sessions around the rural roads of that county; she goes like the wind, with positive steering and acceleration….but with slightly confusing 6 identical unmarked switches low on the dashboard – including ignition on/off and wipers on/off… b.c.

TEALERS AND THE LONDON TO BRIGHTON

Today, 5th November 2017, is the London to Brighton for Veteran Cars. Tealers were there to greet these old classics at Crawley, about the half way point on the sunlit 2017 run; Tealers included Rupert and Jean, Andy Dutton, Shropshire John and Wendy and David Ward. Some of these are classics in their own right. One Tealer (your correspondent) lives quite near Brighton, so was there to welcome the mechanical pioneers, many over 100 years old (the cars I mean) at the finish of their 50-mile plus run on Madeira Drive….

Afternote: Sadly we hear that there was a collision on Reigate Hill which ended with a 1902 Mercedes upside down in the ditch, and two folk badly injured.

Several Tealers have taken part in the annual Kit Car London to Brighton run, an occasion of some merriment with many and various machines, including elegant Teals; and those owning MGs will know the annual MG London to Brighton from Epsom Racecourse to Madeira Drive – some lovely old MGs appear for this splendid rally/run. It doesn’t really matter whether your sporting car is 100 years old or 10, it’s the fun and cameraderie of the event that matters, isn’t it?

Joyce Astill, Tealer wife of Mike of Grimsditch Hall fame (where many Teals were built by Bob Jones between 1994 and 1998), is also a dab hand in the kitchen. She baked this delicious Teal Pie at their converted barn for Bob Jones and Joan, and Tealers Mary and Jeff Turner. Bob assures us that no Teals were harmed in the making or devouring of said pie. Eat your heart out, Great British Bake Off….

Soon after Tealers crossed the Scottish Border near Jedburgh a few years ago, we pulled in to a lakeside (lochside) cafe after a longish, exhilarating run, for a drink and a picnic. We were accompanied by a fine Austin Healey 3000 (the photo car), which made for a colourful picture in itself….

At back right Ian and Lavinia are getting out the kettle ready for a brew….

We had formed up to start out one morning in a supermarket car park but unfortunately Dot and John hadn’t told Roger and Carola their fine four-seater was going for a bargain …

SAD NEWS

Our Club Secretary Andy informs us of the sad news that very early Tealer Ernest Neil (above with his son Roger and Teal Azzurro Uccello – Blue Bird ) has passed away. Ernest, aged 85, was from High Wycombe, built his Teal himself with the help of son Roger, and all three were seen at many Teal events down the last 30 years including Brooklands, the Uxbridge Classic Car Show and Spider Run 1. Blue Bird herself is still with Ernest’s family.

Jean and Rupert in Grasshopper led Tealers on a happy Sussex/Surrey run from Petersfield, on the Hampshire/Sussex borders through (not necessarily in this order) the South Downs to Petworth, around Bosham Harbour on the Channel coast, into Chichester, up to the Devil’s Dyke , to Bramber near Worthing (where Jean grew up) and later north into Surrey…

BOSHAM BOTTOM

At high tide this road round Bosham Harbour is under water; Jean had carefully studied her tide tables, and timed our arrival when only a ridge of seaweed in the middle of the road impeded progress – and all our cars’ bottoms received a thorough cleaning with salted seaweed – here David and Sharon follow Jean and Rupert…

Grasshopper was looking particularly sporty and

Harry and Carol from Essex were there, keen Club members who have taken part enthusiastically in many Teal runs in the UK, France and Spain in their throaty Replicar , the merits of which….

a somewhat-surprising 750-watt microwave oven under the bonnet.

(the Replicar is,of course, a VW-based replica with a rear engine)

A couple of wimps (Brian and Colin) had come in cars with hoods; the weather forecast was variable, but in fact the hoods were not needed….

Our trip ended at a fine car show over the border into Surrey, where we were warmly received; actually the make of the day there was TRIUMPH. There were lots of Heralds, Spitfires and Stags on show – and David’s Teal has a Triumph engine…

We rounded off our trip on a wagon towed by a steam engine…

Harry and Carol from Essex were there, keen Club members who have taken part enthusiastically in many Teal runs in the UK, France and Spain in their throaty Replicar , the merits of which….

Harry discussed with Colin. Actually the LHD Replicar went rather well, considering it appeared to be powered by…

a somewhat-surprising 750-watt microwave oven under the bonnet.

(the Replicar is,of course, a VW-based replica with a rear engine)

A couple of wimps (Brian and Colin) had come in cars with hoods; the weather forecast was variable, but in fact the hoods were not needed….

When we ended up by the sea at Bosham Harbour there was talk of taking a ferry to the other side; but instead we stood and chatted and watched the rising tide; but Colin insisted it was time for …

…his afternoon cup of tea and slice of cherry pie in Chichester; Colin generously gave me a piece too.

Our trip ended at a fine car show over the border into Surrey, where we were warmly received; actually the make of the day there was TRIUMPH. There were lots of Heralds, Spitfires and Stags on show – and David’s Teal has a Triumph engine…

We rounded off our trip on a wagon towed by a steam engine…

CHRISTMAS TEAL IN THE NETHERLANDS –

WITH SANTA’S HELPERS

There is a long-standing tradition in The Netherlands in the run-up to Christmas of children dressing up as Zwarte Piet, apparently a close helper of Santa Claus at this busy time; here Aaldert shows his fine Teal Type 35 surrounded by such children of all ages, both inside and outside the Teal…which itself would make a grand toy sleigh… (for information, in a recent opinion poll 92% of the Dutch supported the continuation of this old tradition, with 8% against).

THREE TEALS (?)

At first glance there are two Teals and four Tealers in this Oxfordshire photo – Dot, Phil saluting the photographer, Maggie and The Captain. But wait – what are those red mudguards – yes, it’s Vital Spark, with Neil Ramsay – because this is the Oxford Run of 2012 organised by Colin and Irené Andrews, with a Bugatti to view in their village and a cross-country run to an historic stately home (and fete) at Henley…. a delightful few days.

ST IVES, CORNWALL – THE PLACE FOR HOLIDAYS, TATE GALLERY (WEST), ICE CREAM – AND TEALS!

Leg 1 of Spider Run 1 ran from Land’s End to Glastonbury. En route it took in the pretty Cornish seaside port of St Ives, which welcomed the Tealers whole-heartedly to the town and to the quayside…. the sun shone brilliantly, but …

Stuart kept his hood up, just in case. Do you know any other Teal Type 35 boat tail with a hood? Me neither. There’s Aaldert’s lovely Type 43 with hood, of course. Seven years after these photos were taken, on Spider Run 2, we came back to Cornwall via the south coast, St Austell and St Michael’s Mount…
